Improving women's land rights in Tanzania
IIED capacity building for the Tanzania Women Lawyers Association (TAWLA) has helped them scale up their work to improve rural women's participation in land governance.

Tanzania is experiencing growing pressures from land-based investments, affecting the communities that depend on land for their livelihoods. The government has adopted provisions for gender equality in land access and governance - but women often remain underrepresented in local decision making about land.
IIED provided TAWLA with training on data collection and analysis and supported the publication of a practical guide summing up TAWLA’s long experience of using local-level laws to encourage women‘s participation in community decision making.
In July 2023, we delivered training to build TAWLA's capability to promote their work online, making it accessible to other organisations working on land rights.
